TOPSE for parents of babies

A number of professionals working with parents of babies have asked us to modify the TOPSE statements for this use.

This revised tool is currently being piloted and ongoing testing is needed to verify the tool’s reliability and validity.

Please contact Prof Sally Kendall (S.kendall-608@kent.ac.uk) for a copy of TOPSE for parents of babies on the understanding that you would agree to share your data with us. This would enable us to continue the process of data analysis with a wider and larger sample of parents.

TOPSE for parents with learning disabilities

In response to feedback from professionals working with parents who have learning disabilities we have developed an accessible version of TOPSE.

A feasibility study was first conducted to determine whether TOPSE could be adapted for parents with learning disabilities. Evidence from this study and in consultation with a speech and language therapist informed the revision of a simplified tool.

The language and presentation of the TOPSE scales have been simplified, statements have been rephrased for clarity and understanding and a five point rating scale using faces rather than numbers has been developed.

This revised tool was developed to evaluate the effectiveness of parenting support for parents with learning disabilities and may have wider relevance also to parents with low literacy skills.

Below is an example of a statement for the tool for parents with learning disabilities.

This revised tool for parents with learning disabilities has been tested on a small sample of parents and ongoing testing is needed to verify the tool’s reliability and validity. The pdf file can be accessed by Professor Sally Kendall S.Kendall-608@kent.ac.uk on the proviso that you would agree to share your data with us. This would enable us to continue the process of data analysis with a wider and larger sample of parents.
